The mission of the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps is "To Motivate Young People to be Better Citizens". To accomplish this mission, the Program Of Instruction (POI) includes such courses as Citizenship in Action; Leadership Theory and Applications; Foundations for Success; Wellness, Fitness, and First Aid; Geography Map Skills, and Environmental Awareness; Citizenship in American History and Government; and a variety of other courses designed to help cadets succeed in high school and in life after graduation.
Speaking Skills, Writing Skills, and Leadership Training gives the cadet a solid base of knowledge to be successful as a leader in school and later in a career. In Leadership Labs, cadets get to actually practice what they have learned in the classroom by assuming the role of small group leaders. They have to be responsible for themselves and their group members. In these situations, the cadet learns what "Leader" really means and feels like. They feel responsibility first hand. They also learn that in order to be a good leader, one must first be a good follower.
Other subjects such as American Citizenship, Government, First Aid, Map Reading, American Military History, the Role of the Services, Marksmanship, Drug Abuse Prevention, Technology Awareness, How to Study, Unlocking Your Potential, and High School Financial Planning provide a well-rounded and highly interesting curriculum for the cadet during the year. Outdoor subjects include rappelling, building rope bridges, negotiating a compass course and Cadet Challenge, as well as Physical Training (PT), all of which build confidence, promote self-esteem and strengthen muscles as the cadets train through the year.
There are also a number of competitive teams a cadet may join. The multiple Drill Teams, Color Guards, PT Team, and Rifle Team all compete at the varsity level against other area high school JROTC teams. Our JROTC Program also hosts the Investment Club which meets once a month and teaches students the fundamentals of good money management as well as having fun through "Paper Trading" on the US Stock Markets. To sum it all up, JROTC is a multi-subject course that prepares a young man or woman for success in any area of life they may enter. It is an action packed, success-oriented program that fosters teamwork and self-confidence.
